Biography

Dr. Ortiz holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic Language and Literature from Boston University. His research focuses on the 19th-century Mexican intelligentsia and their views on liberalism, romanticism, politics, economics, and ethnicity as they relate to the process of nation-building, as well as 20th-century Latin American literature and linguistics.

He enjoys teaching Spanish language, culture, and literature at all levels and encouraging students to participate in community outreach and experiential learning projects. He also actively supports and mentors students who choose to minor or double major in Spanish as a way to strengthen their academic and professional paths. Before joining the University of Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ, he taught at Brescia University, where he was a finalist for the Alpha Chi Honors Society Teaching Award in 2021.

At the University of Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ, his dedication to teaching and student success has been recognized through his nomination for the 2024 Outstanding Teacher Award as part of the University of Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Awards and Recognition program. He is also engaged in service at the departmental, college, and state levels, including work with the University of Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Faculty Senate, the Ohio Faculty Council, the Academic Policies Committee, among other committees and initiatives.
